There Goes The Neighborhood...
Yes, our governor has just been plucked from the obscurity of a governor to the target for all of the dipshit wingnuts who will unwind all of their personal foibles on Mr. Tim Walz, because he's been selected to run to lead the country with Kamala Harris.
To borrow my wife's quote, at least our choices are no longer doddering grampa against crazy grampa. And as far as the soon to be launched "too liberal" attacks the Reprobates will undoubtedly wind up, Walz has said "I'm such a monster. Feeding kids, making sure they got a good education, good health care, lived in a happy place." Yep, that's Minnesota. Walz did not do it all by himself, it certainly helped that many of the other elected representatives in state government weren't out of touch reprobates.
Sure, Mr. Walz had some learning moments. If you, in your life, have not, well then stay quiet in your grave. You might disturb the other mourners. I do not require perfection from those whom I hope to become leaders, I demand only a good, honest effort and a willingness to work and listen. Walz is just exactly that. A Farm kid who went into the Army Reserves, became a teacher and a coach, then decided he wanted to do more. I do not think Walz is one of those who craves an elected office for the power it gives him. From what I have seen, he's just an aw shucks kind of guy who can get things done in a suit, or in a tee shirt and baseball cap.
The republicants will score points on him for his response to the George Floyd riots, when he took several days to call out the national guard. I get it. The national guard aren't a trained police force - they have many jobs, but they aren't exactly equipped to police half a major city. There will undoubtedly be the pissants who did not like how the state responded to COVID-19. Sure, they were unhappy. There was a bar owner in a nearby town who kept opening her bar, letting people come in, unmasked, and spread COVID. Sure, she made money. I do think a fair tradeoff should have been that all of the proceeds she made those days she was open be given to those who had to work there and came down with COVID.
I do pity the other folks, because God help them if Walz gets into a debate. I mean, 20 year social studies teacher who spent 12 years in Congress followed by six, so far, as a governor. I can't see an Ivy League venture capitalist Hollywood Boy who has a fixation on cat ladies winning on that. Walz has so much more life experience - in a good way - than Mr. Cat Lady.
It will be a tense and tough 90 days - but I think it will be good. The only real problem is what happens in two years. We'll be looking at a 2-year Governor. And if you know your Minnesota history, we don't have a good one with governors leaving. See Wendell Anderson, Rudy Perpich, etc.
